We’ve analysed the latest IAB social media study to tell you the top 10 consumer activities on social media to know where to place your advertising.

  1. Chatting/texting. This activity is carried out on social networks “quite or very frequently” by 79% of users. The chat platform par excellence, WhatsApp, does not support advertising today. But as Berta Ventura explained in this blog, Facebook will soon add the ability to send sponsored messages through its new chatbot feature.   2. Watch videos and music. Another top consumer activity on social networks, with 57% of users. Here, the advertising possibilities include placing ads on YouTube and Spotify or even jumping into the pool and creating your own branded video channel.
  3. See what my contacts are doing. 48% of internet users like gossip, so keeping up to date with the news of their contacts is one of their top activities. How to integrate it into your digital marketing strategy? Through ads that are inserted naturally between this content, such as Facebook timeline advertising or Twitter ads.
  4. Publishing and posting content is a “quite or very frequent” activity for 36% of users. Create content they can’t stop sharing and get them talking about your brand!
  5. Follow influencers. The same percentage of users (36%) frequently follow their favorite “thought leaders” on different topics. Have you already thought about your influencer marketing strategy?
  6. For professional purposes/study. This is a top activity for 31% of consumers on social networks. If your products are related to education or you are dedicated to B2B, you will surely come up with ideas to take advantage of it.
  7. Comment on current affairs. 29% of users are fond of following the news, and here the star platform is undoubtedly Twitter. Take advantage of it with your promoted tweets!
  8. Play online. This activity is top for 26% of users. It’s clear that we like to play games, so don’t miss any opportunity to “gamify” your brand experience and hook the target audience.
  9. Become a fan/follow a brand. 23% of respondents (more than one in five!) frequently follow brands on social media. Without a doubt, an excellent opportunity to talk to them and build their loyalty.
  10. Participate in competitions. Finally, another 23% love to join contests. This is one of the most effective strategies to generate buzz around your brand, so don’t forget about it in your marketing plans.
