Microsoft and Meta bring VR glasses for Xbox: Release apparently this week

For years, Meta has been pursuing the goal of making the topic VR (virtual reality) suitable for the masses with the Meta Quest. Supporting as many platforms as possible is important for this. However, VR has not been a big issue on the Xbox. Probably also because similar gaming devices, such as Sony’s VR headset PlayStation VR, have remained niche products. Now, Microsoft is launching the big VR offensive and is working with Meta for this.

On social media, images were leaked of a new Meta Quest with Xbox branding. Accordingly, Microsoft does not want to design VR glasses especially for the Xbox, but instead give the console an offshoot of the already established model series. Meta Quest 3S – Xbox Edition is said to be called the black-green glasses. The original leak has been deleted in the meantime, but the X user bmfshow was able to secure the picture in time. You see it above in this article.

Meta Quest 3S – Xbox Edition: This is known so far

The new Meta Quest 3S is intended to ship with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and apparently not get any native VR games designed for the Xbox. Instead, the device relies on Xbox Cloud Streaming, which would not require a console such as the Xbox Series X or S to play. Microsoft could open access to numerous VR games that have already been released for the PC via the platform.

There is probably already something known about the technology. Thus, 128 gigabytes of storage space should be installed, as much as the normal Meta Quest 3S has. According to the leaks, it is said to cost 399 US dollars, which would be the equivalent of almost 350 euros. In addition to an Elite Strap (headband), a three-month subscription for the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and an Xbox Wireless controller, the scope of delivery will be included. Whether only this is supported or optionally the Meta Quest Touch controller remains unclear.

Release is imminent

The biggest surprise, however, is that the Meta Quest 3S – Xbox Edition is scheduled to be released this month. On 24. Microsoft is to immediately get the device on the market on track without major advance notice. This is reported by the game blog Game Sandwich and refers to unspecified sources.

Microsoft’s last major attempt, which went in this direction for the Xbox, was the HoloLens, which was announced years ago but never established for Xbox consoles. This is an AR glasses (augmented reality), which is now used outside the gaming sector. VR, on the other hand, is uncharted territory for the Xbox and, given the previously moderate success of comparable competitors, the Meta Quest 3 – Xbox Edition is also likely to remain a niche product.
