The petition does not call for an immediate halt to AI research. Instead, it asks Washington to support an international effort to develop technical and governance tools that would allow governments and companies to deliberately pace the advancement of automated AI development.

“The world’s leading AI companies believe they could be close to automating AI research,” the letter states. “It is hard to predict exactly how much this will accelerate AI progress, but there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems”.

“Without appropriate safeguards, [this] could enable cyberattacks at scale,” Song wrote in comments accompanying the petition. She emphasized that protective capabilities cannot be built reliably during an active crisis, calling preparation “the prudent path”.
